Walter C. Anderson is a pioneering telecom entrepreneur and commercial space advocate with a track record of founding and scaling transformative ventures. He began his career in telecommunications, founding Mid-Atlantic Telecom in 1984, one of the first companies to combine telephone and voicemail services, which was later acquired by Rochester Telephone Corporation. He went on to launch Esprit Telecom in 1992, capitalizing on telecom deregulation in the UK, and sold it to Global TeleSystems Group for nearly $1 billion. Anderson was also a major shareholder in Telco Communications Group, which was acquired for $1.2 billion, and an early investor in Erol’s Internet, later sold to RCN Corporation in a deal that netted him $25 million. He held leadership roles at several telecom firms including Worldxchange and Covista Communications.
A passionate supporter of space commercialization, Anderson co-founded the International Space University and helped launch several ventures in the private space sector. He played a key role in founding MirCorp, which aimed to privatize and commercialize the Mir space station, and invested in Rotary Rocket and Orbital Recovery Corporation. In 2013, Anderson founded Avealto, a UK-based company building High Altitude Platforms (HAPs) to deliver low-cost telecom and broadband connectivity to underserved regions globally. Avealto has completed its R&D phase, received FAA certification for a test vehicle, and is now preparing to scale production in the UK. Recognized as one of New Scientist's "Top 10 Influential Space Thinkers," Anderson continues to drive innovation at the intersection of telecom and space.
